CMAS Spring Event -- April 14th.

On Saturday, April 14th 2007 we will hold our annual spring event. This is an all day event featuring 2 speakers, food, vendors, large raffle, etc. This year our speakers will include:

Biography:
I am a natural historian of sea anemones with strong interests in coral
reefs, the deep seas, and high latitudes. A convergence of my research
activities on the biogeography, evolution, systematics, reproduction, and
symbioses of these animals and their relatives led me to build a database
through which I could interrelate seemingly disparate aspects of biology.
As I began to locate what is known (and, by implication, to identify what
is left to be discovered), I became increasingly concerned with limits to
knowledge, and how precision and accuracy must be considered as part of
what is known and what is not.

Richard Harker has been a reef hobbyist for 14 years. His first reef tank was a 90 gallon tank with primarily soft corals. The tank evolved into a stony coral tank in the early 1990s and he has primarily maintained small polyp stony corals since then. In 1995 he stepped up to a 300 gallon reef tank. Photos of the tank have been featured in numerous hobbyist magazine articles and is included in Mike Paletta’s new book, "Reef tanks of the world." In 1999, Harker built a 2000 gallon tank that features nearly 100 square feet of stony corals. The reef tank has been the subject of an article in the 2000 Marine Fish and Reef Annual and the German reef keeping magazine, Koralle.
Harker has published hobbyist oriented articles in several magazines over the past five years. In addition, he is the Product Review columnist for Advanced Aquarist. He has spoken at numerous hobbyist meetings including MACNA and the Western Marine Conference.
In addition to maintaining a large reef tank, Harker has explored natural coral reefs around the world. He has studied and photographed coral reefs on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Palau, Micronesia, as well as Florida and throughout the Caribbean.

Slight change of plans for the better!

In addition to Daphne Fautin, we have Frank Burr & Jake Adams coming out to speak with us!! Don't miss this 3 speaker event!!
We now have Frank Burr coming out to speak with us on QT for Reef Systems.
Frank Burr is the owner of The Coral Oasis (Coral Farm) and Tropical Reef Oasis (Retail Store). Over 20 years Reef experience beginning with a homebuilt 60 gallon mini-reef and progressing to multiple personal tanks, a coral propagation farm specializing in SPS and exotic Zoos with over 900 gallons of propagation tanks as well as a coral and fish quarantine system and a Reef specialty store with over 1000 gallons of display and show tanks.
Frank is conducting ongoing research on improving quarantine methods and eradication of corals pests as well as creating and maintaining small low or no-maintenance self-sustained reef biospheres.

In addition to Frank Burr, we also have Jake Adams, a Marine Science grad currently working on flow related effects on photosynthesis and respiration of Pocillopora damicornis. Additional info on Jake can be found on his website http://www.coralite.net/jake.html Jake has also be the first to create reef-related Podcasts!!
