New to the forum and to the salt world...
I just moved to Bend and i have a 90 gallon tall tank that has always been fresh. I have always wanted to switch to salt but i am a little scared. I have heard it is a lot more work than fresh water. I stopped in to Petco the other day and talked to a guy there (sorry didn't catch his name) but he seemed pretty knowledgable and gave me this website.
So i guess what i'm leading to is .....HELP!!!!!!...i don't even know where to begin!
p.s. remember, i'm totally new at this and need everything in layman's terms...i.e. i have no idea what a frag is!!
Thanks Mel

Welcome!
You probably spoke to Jeremy. Either him or Brody. Anyway Saltwater's not that tough but there are some basic things you need to know. We haven't been meeting through the summer but hopefully that will change soon. In the meantime start doing some basic research by reading the various threads here & we'll fix you up as soon as we get our act together.
Shoot me a quick email & I'll get you on our list.

Hi. Thanks for replying. I would like to start right away with this project. So what are the first steps in getting this thing up and running. I’m finding it a little difficult to read the forum as I don’t know what half of them are talking about. I did some searches, i.e. switching, new, beginner and didn’t really come up with anything.
I was at Petco on Friday, is that the day that Jeremy works? I know I read in the forum that he only works one day at Petco. Light brown hair, w/ beard? Maybe I will go there tomorrow.
Thanks,
Melissa

I would transfer this question over to the General Reef Forum and you'll get more responses. To start off you need to make your tank reef ready- you need some kind of overflow box with a sump.
What I would do is try to find someone to show you. When I first started, there was a kid at petland that showed me everything and pretty much everything he taught me was correct. Maybe you can find a local in your area to help you and then verify the information here. I was clueless when I started, and for the most part I still am, so I can relate if that's how you feel!
Do you want a fish only tank or a reef tank?
Welcome to TRT

Hows it goin, I'm Jeremy and I think Brody was the one you were speaking to. Anyways I have got a bunch of stuff like a sump skimmer power heads possibly lights, ect. I can either donate or get rid of for cheap. Brody may also have some stuff he'd like to get rid of. Anyways if you come into Petco on wednsdays I'll be there or you can get a hold of me here. As for meetings go my house is open any time so lets set a date.

Mel,
It was great trading emails with you today. I'm looking forward to meeting you & have been researching your potential problem. We'll talk about that more later. The COMA group will get you fixed up. Like Jeremy I've got quite an extensive boneyard of equipment & various other sundries. Once your tank gets set up & cycled you can have frags (small cuttings of live corals that, given time, will grow into new colonies) of anything I have. I'll loan you some books when we meet.
