Please help me
Hey I just joined the forum, and have recently got everything for a 48" (55) gal reef tank excluding lights.....Now ive read enough to kill a horse about lighting and am ready to slit the old wrists. I have had a reef tank before and was very successfull with it, but to be honest it was very generic in terms of lights, filtration etc.. This time I have a respectable setup, and am down to the lights bottem line Im broke!! any suggestions? also can I begin cycling my tank w/out lights? Please help Im t$$ deep to turn back now. Thanks

yes you can start cycling without lights. what type of lighjtin are you thinking of? for my old 55 I was able to get a workhorse 7 2- 50/50 uri and all endcaps for under 100$ and wired it myself.

to start off with you can use florescent lighting if just for cycle what ever lighting you can find even an old shop light hung above will do the trick.my first tank was a 125 agressive I ran that with 3 24 in 18 w light strips.not enough for corals but enough to help cycle until you get the extra cash.

welcome!
i would do as suggested, find a good deal on a workhorse 7 (don't pay more than about 45 bucks) get a couple of pairs of vho endcaps, and get a couple of vho bulbs to start. you can do 2 bulbs, and when money is available, you can add 2 more. unless you are planning on doing a lot of stony corals or clams, this will suffice for a while. by the time you have money to start buying the more expensive livestock, you will probably be able to upgrade the lights anyway.
good luck!

what are you planning to keep in the system? A lot will depend on what specimen or specimens are the most important to your system.

Tom is right, check out or Atlanta forum but do so on an almost daily basis, maybe even a few times a day. Stuff for sale all the time, but there are a lt of us so it sometimes goes very quick. Any idea what your budget is?
