Question

Market for Mature Koi?

Hi, I'm wondering if there's actually a market for mature koi in this area? My father has 3 7-yr old butterfly koi (~24" long) that he can no longer keep up; I've found internet ads selling mature koi for up to $3500, but really, is there a market for this? Wouldn't people generally prefer to purchase smaller, cheaper koi and wait for them to mature? I'd like to help my dad sell them if possible. Any input would be appreciated!

Well, my only experience with koi is from working at a petsmart, and having people who are really into koi tell me about them, but basically a mature butterfly that does not have any kind of real distiguishable pattern that is valued by collectors is probably worth about $50. Maybe a little more or less. Its like if you have a show quality rabbit you can get a lot of money for it, but a normal rabbit is worth a few dollars. You can get a 8-10 inch koi at petsmart for $15 and sometimes there are butterfly koi mixed in for the same price. Hope this helps.
