Yuse 'ta Jeff,,,in the old days,,,Tiger Oscar,,,,closest thing to a "pet" inna tank, til SW,,
then African tanks,,then bred 'em,,,
just a few weeks ago, i started my cousin in FW again,,,Africans.
i'm walking him thru it,,so i "have" a African community tank now,,til i wean me off it,as he gets the hang of it,,,,
and when i ran a LFS, i had one(or more) of each at one time or another at home,,,Discus,Africans,South Americans etc.....

As I saids in another post I really really love Discus but running a close second are the Apisto's. Great color and selection from a dwarf fish.

i used to be huge into africans. Malawi to be exact. i still find myself scoping the cichlid sections in LFS for some cool new species. i keep thinking about starting up a huge rift tank.

There are so many color varieties in Africans but bad part is is alot of the LFS carry just a mumble jumble of crosses its hard to get a trueblood now un less ya order from a breeder.
BTW I know some if ya wanna do a rift tank hehehhe

that little tid bit of info is not lodged in my head.
i agree, there is way to much mudding of the gene pool in these guys. it is now nearly impossible to find a true M. johanni anymore. all that is out there are the electric blue ( M. maingano )variety. the true one is still one of my all time favs. a solid black fish with bright blue outlines. when showing it is an impressive looking opponent.
