I kinda have a pond, it's a 100 gallon rubbermaid stock tank that I keep in my second bedroom across from the 180 gal saltwater tank.

Thanx Sara! The design was a final exam for a horticulture course that I took. It's 4.5 feet deep so the fish can stay in all winter

i also have a preform outside (not sure the gallons, was my grammas she said i could keep it if i dug it up for her lol. decent size though). i live in michigan though very cold winters so im not sure if im going to try to heat it or bring my koi in. just put it in this spring. alot of people out this way have also had problems with blue herrons (pelican looking birds) feeding on their fish!

At the very least, you need to keep a hole in the ice with a floating heater, to allow gas exchange.

No liner to speak of, but i'm planning of getting a pond here on the "farm" ,,,about a acre in size,,,,Went to a seminar near me, and got loads if info regarding farm , or earth ponds. The state and DNR helped out a lot in what to do, and how to do it,,,I heard from a guy at work , about a guy near me that was heard to dig large ponds like the one i want, and charging only for the dirt removed,,,,He'll dig a pond for ya, and take away the dirt he dug out,,,,sounds like a great deal for me! LOL. My friend/diving buddy just bought 15 acres a few miles from my 10 acres, and he spoke of hearing about a guy that digs ponds,,,,,and only charges, by taking the dirt excavated,,,sounds like the same guy i heard about Either way , i told him (b4 he spoke of this fella) "you dig your pond, and i'll help you, and when I dig my pond , you help me" my buddy said no problem (plus he has access to lots of construction/excavating machinery ) He wants to go larger, but i'm going to stick with just around acre, one reason being the state/DNR gives you a lil bit of trouble/static , if you go larger than a acre in size,,,At the seminar,m they told of what to stock it with, and how many of what fish,,,(They recommended Bass, and Bluegill,,,with channel cats if desired) Think they said for a one acre pond, stock it with 800 bluegill, and 200 bass,,,that way the pond will have a good chance to self sustain itself,,,with the bluegill being the food for the bass,,the channel cats are a option,,,to balance the pond life out. They said no to a lot of other species of fish,,,since some can upset the balance,,and turn the pond into a mess , on so many levels.

If/When i get my pond dug and started, i hope/plan on putting on my wetsuit, and rest of my scuba stuff and swim wit 'da fishes,,LOL

In the back of my mind, i 'd like to set up a smaller (liner) pond somewhere around the property here,,but with all the wild critters here, i'd have to raccoon/coyote/snapping turtle/fish eating birds -proof the pond. ShirleyM (member here) has a pond in her back yard, and installed a electric fence around her pond,to keep away the raccoon(s) or whatever had been wreaking havoc on her pond in the past,,,Hopefully ,with either pond i am wishing i do not have any major problems relating to predators snacking on either ornamental fish in the liner pond, or too much of a problem in the acre sized pond with that many ,in the beginning, fingerling bass n bluegills, with a hungry snapping turtle, or heron,,or whatever that has a taste for fish,,,,
