White stuff

Hi, in the past week my fish tank has been developing a fluffy whitish stringy stuff, my fish are not eating and all of their food is on the bottom of the tank growing this stuff. I have 2 red cap oranda gold fish in a 10 gallon tank. Please if anyone knows what this is or what I can do let me know. Thanks

Welcome to TRT!

Sounds like the food is sitting in the tank to long if it hads time to develope that white stuff on it, Do you have any filters or anything else on the tank, This will more then likely get answered better in the freshwater forum. Have you checked it out

Yes I have a Filter and lights in the tank. When I cleaned the tank yesterday when I took the top off there was an awful smell too. The tank has never smelt that bad before. And the tank was not dirty other than the food on the bottom with the white stuff growing off of it.

Lets go ahead and get the stats on the tank. We need to know:
temp
PH
Filtration type
size of tank
what fish do you have
how often/much are you feeding?

Ok I cleaned out the tank yesterday and I got home from work and it is getting cloudy (it never gets cloudy) And The temp on my tank is about 75 degrees. I dont know the PH. I have a tetra Filter. The tank is 10 Gallons and I have 2 red cap oranda goldfish. I feed them a pinch when I wake up and a pinch when I go to sleep. Hope that helps a little

well, I recommend first getting a PH kit at least. How long was the tank set up before you added the fish?

I have had the fish for 2 years. And this has never happened before. I will go out and buy a PH kit.

I agree with the above statement about possiably over feeding.

One thing to keep in mind too you may need to upgrade and get a bigger tank. The Oranda's get quite large and do produce alot of waste. They have been knows on a common basis to get 10 inches or better. Look into possiably getting a 40 or even a 55 if space allows.

By the cloudy water I would bet you are recycling the tank meaning you too out too much bacteria at once and it is building it up again.

How often do you feed?
