YUp ya could. If you do I would be more apt to go bare bottom and cover the bottom with driftwood for cover

I have always been a big fan of south american, or new world cichlids. Butterfly Rams are lovely comunity fish that won't tear up a planted tank.

How about dropping the waterline 5", arranging potted plants around the back/sides with trailing plants such as spiders and ferns, pothos, jew that hang down to the water line inside. Add some bog stumps and aquatic plants, then stock with four-eyed fish, archerfish, and butterfly fish. For the bottom perhaps a farowella twigcat or some other interesting bottom dweller.

just a suggestion, I also have a 55 gal tank, and what I did was decorate my main hallway with jungle/safari stuff, like plants, wooden giraffes, bamboo curtains, and all kinds of african/amazon stuff. Then I just put a bunch of realistic fake plants in the water and put my piranha in it (or any african/south american fish). It really looks cool, and makes you feel like your in the jungle. I really want to put that yellowish murky tint in the water to make it look even more natural. The cool thing about a freshwater tank, is that you can really put a personal/decorative twist on it. My suggestion, is to match your tank to your personal taste, and then decorate around it to make the whole room stand out. It will look piiiiimp!!!!

wow im feeling pretty unoriginal and boring about my 55g planted community tank right about now with all y'all's crazy ideas.
I liked the idea about putting a bunch of driftwood on a bare bottom and letting a few bichirs go nuts in there.
If you wanted a crazy amount of flashy color, you could do a big group of new guinea red rainbowfish (males are red with flashy silver scales and females are olive green with flashy silver scales) with live plants and driftwood. If you cant find a pic of the fish, I will stick one of mine on here.

55 gallons? a wimple piranha. I guess you can also put a red bellied piranha there. My red bellied pair are in a 75 gallons and they do well.

I'm with Alaska. A nice, planted discus tank. Have you ever seen discus parents with fry? Pretty cool.
