What kind of "filtration" for a 450g tank??

I am so used to reef tanks, I don't know what to use on a freshwater tank, other than a good ole Ehiem Canister filter, like I had for my 75g. What does one do?? A large bio-ball wet/dry is what I thought I had read. Any suggestions?? I plan to implement a 100 gallon sump (part of the 450g system).

If you have a heavy load you can even incorporate a protine skimmer, i have one on my planted 75 gallon fresh water and 2 Cascade 1000 canister filters and it works well, my tank is pretty loaded, and like was posted above, wet/dry! will work great! JMO!

i would do a dual filter sock in sump with carbon in them then pump back up. that would simulate a large version of all the other HOB style filters.

Brent,

How does the skimmer work on your FW tank? I have a 375 inwall full of Africans and would love to be able to skim it.

I have never heard of a skimmer actually running on a fresh water system. I guess I don't understand how it would work.

Sasquatch, can you give me a link to some sort of visual aid so I understand what to look for?? I am unfamiliar with the word Arrowana. Is that a brand or a type of filter.

So far, the best thing I have come up with, short of paying WAY TOO MUCH for a commercial wet/dry, is to load a couple buckets with bioballs, and filter pads on top, drill holes in the bottom and drain tank water into them. They would be in the sump of course.

no bioballs as they will trap and hold too much crap. just get some rubbermade tubs and filter socks.
