Thinking of builing a pond in my yard

any good websites, or plans or suggestions. I don't want koi, just goldfish and some cool plants about 8' x 4' maybe 18" to 24" deep. I am clueless with what to do and how to do it. any suggestions????

This site is populated mostly by Canadians and Yankees (no offense anyone). They're heavily into koi but they are extremely knowledgeable about construction, etc. (Especially in the Northern zones).

If you're down south, build the pond just as deep as up north so the fish don't fry in the summer. I have a 1900 gallon in the front yard with large koi but I put tropicals in during the warmer months. Livebearers will breed like crazy in a pond.

You'll need it deeper then 2' to keep fish in it all yr.And they make plastic shape ponds or a material to line any shape hole you make,You need a filter,uv,pump.Water fall helps with aerating the water.

We live in MN and the deepest spot in our Pond is about 2' and everything survives just fine, we do however run a heater in the winter just to keep it open. Here is a picture and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. We do keep both Koi and Goldfish. We have made some mistakes along the way, so there are some gotcha's to watch out for.

Building a pond is a good idea. In Menorca, you can see a variety of pond being built in every houses.

I had to go 4.5 feet deep due to cold weather up here. I keep pond heaters in both ponds to keep holes in the ice. I have koi in the upper, and goldfish in the lower.

Here is some pics of my koi pond build right now. Obviously way more then you want to do, but Ive been building ponds for years. 2' is absolute bare minimum for any type of fish not only because of winter freezing but predators and also with such a shallow pond water temps can change drastically from daytime to night time. Check out www.koiphen.com lots of great info on there. As for your pond let me know your desires for the pond and we can take it from there. You can go all out with bottom drains(required in my opinion for any pond), all sorts of returns, monster filtration etc or you can just to a plastic 80gallon pond with submersible pump, barrel filter and a uv. last pic you can really get an idea of how deep my koi pond is
