Thx, I have had it this way for just about 4 years. My only issues are that the water will sometimes start to smell if I go more than 3 weeks between water changes.

I used to do em every two weeks but after checking water conditions, I found that I could really go for more than 6 or 7 weeks if I reaslly wanted to.

It won't skim. My LFS had a skimmer running for about a month on a tank that ws holding FW in it. ( They just kept putting off adding salt forever ) so when I'd go in there, lik every other day!!! LOL I would always go see if it was skimming. And It never did. Something to do with the hardness of the water. You know like water softeners use salt to soften water.

the bubbles dont get fine enough in fresh water for the organics to adhere or something like that, I read.....(probably due to softness/hardness of water...)

I've spoken to a few different folks on line about the occasional smell and they tell me that water changes and lots of carbon will do the trick.

I am thinking about an Ocean Clear In-Line filter with the carbon unit plus the micron filter.

Sad news though, my huge Pleco died last night. I had him for about 9 years! He was a little over 13" and about 6 pounds.

I guess it was his time.

Here's one close up. The tank is 18" deep and the rock at his tail sits about 3 1/2" off the back of the tank!

I am trying to get them to accept pellets, but their favorite stuff is Tetra Min Pro TRopical Crisps!!

I have on occasion let them have some cooked shrip, chicken, hamburger, and some red worms.

When they get the meaty stuff, they actually stuff so much in that you can see it hanging through their gills and out of their mouths!

We have 2 FW tanks, a 100g and a 90g, both have undergravel filters with Phs, 3 magnum 350s on each, 1 with glass wool, one with carbon, and 1 with the water polisher, keeps the flow rates higher in them to only use 1 media type per filter, both have 4 48" NO bulbs and two 24 inch actinics for color. both are african cichlid tanks, 10% water changes weekly with tap water using a python water changer (easy). both also have 100 gph phs in the bottom third for circulation, and I use holey rock and fake plants, the 100 gallon has rock from side to side coming out of the top of the water, leaves less swimming room, but I have so much spawning in that tank with tons of hiding places. Both tanks are great, havent lost a fish in years in either tank other than babies. I have large frontosas, and foot long plecos in the 90g. wish the SW tank would work so well !!! only thing that stinks is trying to keep up a maintanence schedule on 6 magnums, takes a long time to clean and service all of em, but they are very reliable, one of them I have had for 8 years with no probs, only changed the gaskets once !!!
