Question

Suggestions for a Small Tank at Work?

I keep thinking that I should put a little tank on my desk at work, maybe a 7 gallon bow front. What fish would you keep in such a situation?

I was thinking that dwarf puffers would be great but at least some people who keep them say they are not the best candidates for fasting two days a week. And they tend to like live food which is a little hard to provide at work. (Can't you just see the face of the co-worker who comes across wriggling blood worms while snooping in the frige ?)

Would a seven gallon be large enough for breeding a pair of blue rams? Or how about some Tanganyikan shell dwellers? That might be the coolest but I've never kept them.

Any ideas for me?

Deborah

Deborah,

That sounds like a neat project. I think the 7g would be fine for either of the species you listed. I'm partial to the rams -never had any luck with them - but I think they are gorgeous little fish.

Rams are pretty tough to figre out. I have found that a PH of about 6.5 to 7.0 works best little lower water temp maybe depending on what species ya have of Apisto.

The Shelles would be great also but like most of them they do like a little higher ph that most FW fish

And I'll bet I know where you're going to buy those fish, Deb. I miss that store! (It's called "The Wet Spot" LOL but it's the best-kept LFS - fresh or salt - that I've ever been in.)

I'm going to resurrect the SW nano in my office

Got it in one, Alice - and I wonder where I got the idea for a tank at the office, hmmm?

I may go with the rams just because water adjustment wouldn't be needed. I had a pair before that spawned as soon as I put them in a community tank but then wouldn't repeat the performance in a 10 gallon all to themselves.
