Silly freshwater setup question?

Here's the stats.... bought son very small Oscar.. placed Oscar in 20 gal aquarium.. very small Oscar now = 5 or 6 inch Oscar in same 20 gal tank. So I want to put it in a 55 gal tank. So the question of the hour is.... drum roll please.......

When I set this 55 up.. can I run it into a sump like we do Saltwater? Or do I have to have an undergravel filter?

And yes of course I'm in the middle of doing it...Isn't that how us guys are supposed to do things... act first.. think later? LOL

Actually I have enough equip and parts to run either way.. but would prefer to run an overflow and not have to worry about cleaning rock and undergravel filter. Thanks for the advice.. even though it is a bit off topic!

youll have to clean the gravel with or without the filter. id just go buy an emporer 400 hob filter or something comparable. i wouldnt do it either of the ways your talking about personally.use the kiss method. good luck.

I wasn't going to use a substrate.. so it's pretty simple. Pump in the sump.. return to tank... overflow. If I have to use gravel then I will use what I already have and then supplement..That's why I was asking about doing it like salt.. We already have a couple of nice size chunks of rock.. use them for bio load. All suggestions and ideas are welcome!

You could actually do both if ya wanted and use a 100 micron filter sock on the overflow tube in the sump so as not to have a mechanical filter hanging in the tank.

IMO ya can not over filter a tank. IE undergravel filter and the sump with bio balls or a filter sock.

Jim, undergravel filters and adult oscars don't go well together. Actually your idea of plumbing it all to the sump would be ideal. Oscars start to dig in the substrate when they think they are grown up and want to start housekeeping. all that digging and rearranging of the tank decor and life support system will completely undermine the efficiency of the filters and could lead to fried (or boiled) fish, broken heaters, broken filter tubes....you get the picture. The ideal is to get all the junk out and into the sump where it is safe. As to filtration, you'll need excellant bio filtration since oscars are not only big (up to 15") but they are also gluttons with sloppy table manners. Run the water from the tank through pans of sand, over bioball, through sponges, over biowheels, or, all of the above. For ease of cleaning, I would get rid of gravel in the main tank and replace with slate on the bottom and large rocks and bogwood for decor. It can look really sharp and be easy to keep clean. For the ultimate bottom, select some really nice slate, or even marble floor tile and glue (with aquarium sealant) to the bottom for a permanent floor that detritus will not get lost under. If you want a great read on keeping big fish, look for "The Manual of Tank Busters" by Sandford and Crow by Tetra Press.

That's great advice thank you! I had a friend that had 2 oscars in a 125 and they were quit large. And they did exactly what you said. They tore that tank apart, he could never keep a heater in it. So where is Azle TX?
