I seriously thought about that but I don't want the hassles of a mini reef at work and I would be worried about when I'm off for a few days at a time

ah, ok. really... you don't need to worry about the chlorine treatment or anything. just throw tap water in for WC and you should be fine. to setup they only need to sit overnight.

Cool I'll probably wait until Monday to get the fish maybe some plants tomorrow. I'm off all weekend so I'd worry to much about a fishy for 2 days

DECHLORINATE ALL TAP WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!
RO/DI is fine if you get some sort of acid buffer for the water to replace all the needed minerals.
Bettas can live in itty bitty bowls and in acid waters, wich carry less oxygen, because they can absorb atmosperic O2. But this is a survival trait developed from evolving in leaf litter pools wich dry and become issolated from flowing water in the summers. Just because an animal "can" survive in harsh conditions doesn't mean you should keep them in harsh conditions. You have a great home BTW... I despise those little Betta Orbs. IMO those are the cruelest thing you can do to a Betta. 5g is great for one fish. Look into gettin some Java Moss. It doesn't require strong light and will act like a FW cheato. It'll help keep the water clean. To avoid fouling the substrate as fast, get floating food such as freeze dried brine, blood worms and a general tropical flake smashed up really fine. Feed when you get to work and when you leave and only as much as it can pollish off in a couple minutes.

Sad News
Merlin the Betta seems to have disapeared He was Fine Tuesday at 5 when I left work but he seems to have gone missing sometime Wednesday afternoon. Andrea (coworker and fish caretaker when I'm off) saw him Wed AM when she turned the lights on. I have looking in the powerhead and also the intake for the biowheel thingy. He is nowhere to be found. The eclipse tank has a sealed hood but I did check all around the tank in case somehow he jumped out. Funny thing is there isn't even a corpse. My last resort is the gravel but I've never heard of a Betta burying itself

Decomp can happen pretty quick in warm water. Look for a white fuzzy spot on the gravel or in the plants and even possibly in the filter. Most Bettas sold are in thier "40's" to begin with. So if you've had him for a year or more you've had a good run. Try to find a breeder in your area and purchase a juvi. Then you'll have a chance to actually enjoy a betta 3-5 years possibly.

I checked as well as I could coming in 3 days after the disapearance I'll check with Andrea on Monday about any Fuzzy's but she saw him Wed AM and was gone Wed afternoon at 5 when she went to feed him. I've only had him a week or 2 at most but it did come from Petsmart.

I had Bettas for more than 15 years and never had one jump out or decompose that quickly. Maybe you have a fish napper? You could literaly put him in a cup and walk away. I am sorry for your loss.

Thats what I'm leaning towards as well. The people working swear no one came in back to take him.

Well, I breed Bettas and I have had a few jumpers. Decomp that fast isn't likey but it's a possibility. Especially if the temp get's into the mid 80's or you have other inhabitants such as glass shrimp. If somebody did steal it him then that would be worse IMO. Things die, that's just nature. But stealing a fish is just low.
