Saw the infamous "glofish" this weekend

Happened to stop by Segrest's farm this weekend and got to see some of the glofish. What do you folks think about them?

Never heard of them, neat site, but did they look better in person?

Alot of states are actually making them Illegal to see as they may survive in the waters of the state. California is one I do believe. The Chain I work for will not carry them because of the genetic principal of it but yet they will carry the Parrot fish. Welcome to Corp Business I guess

I've seen them on the cover of a big aquatic supply catalog... i can't remember the name of the company, but last year's thick catalog had the floro red zebra danios on the cover.

Yeah, pretty bright color and i have to admit they are interesting, but i want them in my tank about as much as i want those poor tattooed glassfish or the stained "Blueberry" or "Strawberry" tetras.....

i don't want to know what you have to do to a fish to make it look like cotton candy.....

Well, if they can hatch and grow chickens in a matter of weeks, you think they could put a little flourescent marker in the flakes........

Great post topic!

IMO they are artificial, I mean I dont think they look "natural", not something that I would want in one of my tanks.

However I can see the fit with neon decorations and blacklights, like a disco tank!
Oh I know, they would be perfect fish for the "fish in space" desktop aquarium!

I have seen some in the stores and quite frankly I am disappointed. There color is not even close to what the magazine showed. I would not waste a dollar on one. They are very disappointing.

do they breed true?

i mean zebbie danios aren't hard to get to spawn, is this coloration something that is now in their genetics or is it like a F1 hybrid in plants.... at least i think its F1 stage... ?

Segrest had a lot of "modified" fish when I was there last year. I hate to see dyed fishes - I can't imagine why people would buy something like that when they realize what the fish had done to it... but then again, people dye themselves with tattoos and piercings... so I guess it's 6 of one, a half-dozen of the other...

I have no plans to carry them, I'm not sure how I feel about the whole genetic modification thing - so while I sit on the fence, I'm going to just stay away from it altogther.

Greg - were they all that and a bag of chips? As much as I'm not going to buy them, the curious part of me wants to see.

I'm going to the PIDA pet show at the end of the month, and Segrest will have a booth, so I guess I'll see them there.

I have seen some in the LFS where I live. They are pretty cool but they need a certain light to look their best (just like other fishes)

Jenn, I wasn't terribly impressed, but remember this is coming from someone that isn't a fresh water fish keeper. They just looked like little red fish to me with a little bit of neon color to them. Of course, they weren't under black light in the holding tank either.
