Rainbow fish

I have a friend of mine who says he has a rainbow fish and for a long time it was just dark blue and didn't do anything. Then he noticed that it would turn black at night and turn back when the lights came on. Now he has added a patriot crab and says it gets a yellow stripe down it's back and attacks the crab. Does anyone have any experience with these fish? They sound interesting.

Sounds to me like it was possiably the only rainbow in the tank. If this is true he had no reason to display color. Some fish display colors as a sign of dominance or to attract a mate. This may be the case.
