Question

Planted fresh water 12g Eclipse started

I really wanted to do a fresh water planted tank again but want able to buy the larger tank i had been looking at. So I decided to take my 12g Eclipse which was once a reef tank and use it. I got live fresh water planted gravel, RO water from Wal-mart(same water I use for my reef tank), and got it up and running last night. I am not sure of the lighting. I am thinking of getting either the 18" 36w Current Nova t-5 fixture. That will give me 3wpg. It comes with a 10,000k and a actinic bulb. I will have to swap out the actinic for another 10,000k or a 6,700k. Also is it a bad idea to put a Koralia Nano in the tank for slight water movement. What do you guys think about this set up.
This is the gravel I got

this is the description of the live substrate

This mineralogically and biologically complete substrate is for planted aquariums and comes in live water that contains purifying bacteria.

Mineralogically complete means it contains iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfur plus over 25 other elements to nourish your aquatic plants. It contains all the mineral nutrients needed for luxuriant aquatic plant growth without nuisance algae. This iron-rich substrate eliminates the need for laterite.

Biologically complete means it contains live heterotrophic bacteria to rapidly convert fish waste into natural food for your aquatic plants; creates a natural biological balance which makes cycling a new aquarium faster and safer; packed in Liquid Amazon buffered Black Water solution for immediate organic water conditioning; unsurpassed MacroPorosity for healthy roots and bacterial efficiency. You would need to buy 4 bags of ordinary gravel to equal the surface area of this one bag of substrate.

Other features include: nitrate and carbonate free-will not increase pH or carbonate hardness; there are no artificial dyes, paints or chemical coatings; the natural black substrate encourages the most vibrant coloration in fishes and reduces fish stress; spherial grains for optimum diffusion performance; supplies calcium without raising the pH; lead free.

The Bi-Modal grading naturally separates into 2 distinct layers: 1) Fine layer on the bottom for best root development and 2) Coarse layer on top which conveys oxygen and nutrients to the roots.

You need to use RO right or a similar product if you use ro water for fresh water. Also read around plantedtank.net to get a grasp on things. Planted tanks can be more tricky that reefs if you buy the wrong plants and dont have the right equipment

Is the "water lettuce" you purchased a floating plant? If it's the one I'm thinking of it's going to need a lot more light than 36 watts. I used it as a pond plant for years (until it was banned in Texas as an invasive species).

Do you plan on dosing C02?

I got a current 40w pc fixture actually. They are spread rapidly in the display tanks at work with crap lighting over them so i think 40w pc right over top will be good.

You can use regular aquarium salt at lower doses to re-ionize your ro-di. I use 1 tbs to 5 gal.
