phosphate sponge

Hi,

I'm trying to get the water in my aquarium as clear as the tanks at petco, so i bought kent marine phosphate sponge.

I wanna make sure I don't kill the fish, so i was wondering if I should take the fish out and put a canister in the tank and let it sit for awhile. or is it okay to set a canister in the freshwater aquarium with a few holes to let it do its thing?

instructions are very vague. It also says i should wash the phosphate, what is the purpose of this if i'm already going to put it in the tank?

Thanks

Typically, you would place it in the filter. What type of filter do you have? You rinse it off to get the dust off of it so that the dust doesn't pollute your tank.

But, if your water is "dirty", then you need to try to figure out why. My 55G tank is crystal clear and I have never done anything to it other than use a Whisper 30/60 filter on it (I have 2 on it actually). I have never run anything other than carbon in the filters and it has a dirt bottom for the plants. It started off cloudy (you couldn't see in it at all) and within 3 days it was crystal clear.
