New tank owner

I bought a 75 gal tank that is being delivered/set up later today. I would do this myself, but I am having bad back spasms this week and the service is free. I want to have a few angelfish and other compatable species. What species interact well with angels? What is a good species to introduce to the tank for its first cycle? How quick/slow do I add fish?

Thye tank is set up and everything is put into place. The man said I can begin with 4-6 fish tomorrow after he te4sts the water. He suggested one of the Tetra species. He also suggested that I bring a water sample once a week for a while for him to test. He said that I could get a few more fish every week, if the water is okay. Does this sound right? Are Tetras okay with Angelfish? I am looking at Lemon or Cardinal Tatras to start with. Can aGoldfish or Beta go into such a tank?

Hi Joe,

WELCOME to TRT!!!!

Right, like Jeff said, Goldfish aren't "tropical fish" for the tropical fish tank. They produce a slime that isn't compatible with your tropical fish, also.

The tetras work well. One betta (not two males, as they will fight with one another) will work fine.

It sound to me like he's rushing the bioload on the tank.

Also, get your own test kit and do the testing yourself... imho.

Watch the ammonia levels and if they rise, do a quick partial water change... too many fish will cause a sudden rise in ammonia levels.

Have some large mystery snails and live plants to keep it clean.

What's your filtration system? Undergravel? With some pwr heads for water movement? A charcoal canister to polish (clean) the water?

Keep it away from a window to prevent algae growth on the glass.

Too much fish food will add to the waste (rotten uneaten fish food) that will eventually add to the bioload and possibly kill your fish, or deplete oxygen in the water which harms/kills your fish.

I would start with a couple 3 fish, then add a couple at a time with 2-3 weeks in between so the good bacteria has time to develop and keep up with the system.

Show us PICS!!

My angels, way back when I had a f/w tank, did well with live producers such as mollies, guppies, swordtails, platys, and then non-livebeareres such as neon tetras, zebras, and others I can't remember the names of. I overstocked my tank (I was a kid and a teen-ager) and lost fish every now and then.

Good luck!

I have attached a pic below. The tank has two Emporer 280 wheeled power filters that can filter 50 gallons each. I figured its safer to have too much filtration that barely enough. I was going to add live plants, but the store recommended that I wait 6-9 months before doing so. I have added a lot of plastic plants in the back for hiding places. I bought the tank set up from a small shop because his tanks have thicker glass than the cheaper ones that Pet Supermarket and Petco sell. I figured the thicker glass eqauals a stronger tank.

Another question: does O2 help in fighting the bad stuff in the water? If so, I will consider buying two O2 pumps to add more O2 to the water. I remember reading somewhere about O2 helping to fight this battle, but cannot recall where I read this at.

Joe, Air pump's jobs are to move water via the bubbles,,and to help gas exchange at the surface,,You really don't add oxygen as has been said in the past(or now)It's more at the surface ,with the added water movement,,

Right, like Jeff said, and water movement is good, live plants are good (why wait?) the hiding places are good, and you'll want to lightly vacuum the top of the gravel every now and then... don't disturb it too much.

Some catfish and plecostomus (sp) will be nice later on.

Do a monthly 15-20% water change... age the water... to get rid of the chlorine/chloramine. Even though you use the additives, I usually let it age a day anyway. For freshwater, use tap water, not RO (reverse osmosis) water.

Beautiful tank!!

I got some Clown Loaches. they are cool fish. I ahve a scholl of six that are active and fun to watch. I have only had two fish die (Three Eyed Gouramis). The store owner said that most of his died also. I feel that the tank is doing well. The water quality is good and its almost time for a water change.

I will take some pix and post for you when I get a chance. What is the best way to deal with algae? I am starting to get some. I do have two Corie Cats and two Bearded Algae Eaters.

I don't know the answer to that one... it's been years and I was "stupid" back then... I just scraped the sides and did water changes...

Large Mystery Snails do wonders at keeping the sides of the tank and the tank decorations free of algae.

Ghost shrimp help keep the substrate clean. They are cheap so if they are eaten its no great loss (they sell them for 10 cents each at our WalMart).
