It's great fun.
I put some duckweed in my tank and it provided a natural hiding place for the fry. Large Amazon swords that brush the surface also do this.

What would duckweed need in terms of lighting? also would cherry shrimp be fine if I put fake plants and with my stocking list of guppies, platies, and neons?

Adult cherry shrimp are fine with most live breeders. Some larger molly like the sailfin molly will get large enough to bother them. Guppy won't. Regardless the fry are in danger from any fish until they are larger. For this reason it's good to provide them with hiding places.

Duckweed doesn't require too bright of light. I kept mine with a standard florescent bulb. There are other plants you can use so research to find the one that is right for you.

Looking for a larger fish to set of the smaller schooling fish? I would suggest a geophagus, very colorful and peaceful fish will make for a great center piece in a community tank. They can get up to 4 to 6 inches, but are typically 3 inches and will only grow as big as there surroundings will allow.

Here is a link to what they look like...
