Deb,

Siamese as opposed to the Chinese algae eaters? Or are they the same thing?

I believe the siamese are the common algae-eaters in the shops. A much better choice, IMO, is the chinese or butterfly algae-eater, Beaufortia leveretti, a real charmer and completely harmless. Another great choice is the little Otocinclus algae eater, Otocinclus affinis. They are much smaller, are not territorial, and will not harrass your other fish like the common algae-eater can. Keep 'em in groups of 3 or more.

If indeeed they are the true simese algae eater. The wholesaler we use had them but come to find out after some more looking they were flying foxes. But like was said Otto's are worth thier weight in gold.

Aren't common names for fish wonderful? What I call a Siamesis Algae Eater (SAE) is the Crossocheilus siamensis (sort of related to barbs). The fish I've seen called the Chinese Algae Eater (CAE) is Gyrinocheilus aymonieri . The CAE is noted for becoming aggressive as it gets older and losing all interest in algae. I have not seen any reports of aggression in SAE although they may not be as effcient at removing algae in later life. They do eat red/black algae which most otos and other algae eaters shun preferring the green stuff.

Of course then you have the "false" SAE to mix things up, and creative naming at LFS coming up with things such as "Siamese Flying Fox", etc., just to confuse the issue further.

Here's a site describing the Algae Eaters
http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/
(I was looking at a site with wonderful photos of the relevant fish just last week but I can't remember where it is. Mind like a steel trap, that's me.)

I've always seen the Beaufortia leveretti oodleyboodley mentioned called the Hillstream Loach (very cool looking it is, too).

I was under the impression they needed fast moving water (which isn't recommended for most plants). Sounds as if that has not been your experience, Oodley?

Nah, we kept 'em in a 20g with just the Aquaclear200 for circulation....but then the powerfilter was more circulation then recommended for planted tanks, too. Still, in a low light tank, the extra circulation wasn't so critical, the plants never seemed to suffer from co2 depletion. The fish did great and was one of the most interesting fw fish I kept.
