Jack Dempsey
Hello all....
I have a pair of Jack Dempseys that I am trying to sex. One is very dark, (Black) with glittery spots all over it and also has a lot of iridescent blue spots from the front half of its body. The dorsal fin is almost as dark as the body and is tipped in red and s very pointed at the end. From what I have read, this is a male. This fish is very aggressive, chasing an Oscar that is more than twice his size!
The second fish is very light colored, almost a cream and silver body that has black stripes running vertically, kinda like a tiger! It also has the iridescent blue, but not nearly as much as the other JD. The dorsal fin is again the same color as the body and is tipped in red and is also very pointed. Everything I have read says that this is a female due to the lighter coloring BUT this fish has pointed fins. A female is not supposed to have pointed fins. This fish is smaller and less aggressive as well.
My initial thought is that I do have a male and female. I am putting together a 65 for them to see if they're interested in making more Jacks! I even went out a bought a new mood light for em!! Now to find candles that burn under water!!
