I'll start... What FW buffers/supplements or other products do you use?

Subject line says it all...

*edit* Hit the wrong button too fast...

Also, what test kits do you use for freshwater? Do you use RO or tapwater? If you use RO, what do you use to reconstitute the water?

Things have changed very much since I was a freshwater hobbyist... so I'm hungry to learn.

I prefer the Wardley's test kit for ease of use. There are the red sea test kits that are fair but IME the Wardley's covers most of the basics.

Do you use RO or tapwater?

I would use RO if I was setting up a Tank that was in need of buffering meaning adjusting the PH up or down to any extreme.
There are some buffers etc to replentish the RO water. Once again depending on what you are keeping. There is Malawi Lake salt and softeners for the planted tanks etc. You use these buffers and additives like you would in a SW tank

Most applications IMO Tap water will work.

My test kit is Aquarium Pharmeseuticals... int he past i never had any problems with accuracy that i know of- of course i didn't know a whole lot more then than i do now, and i forgot most of it anyway

I did use some "Flourish" brand waterplant liquid ferts for the two tub ponds i had in the back yard last summer.... had mini water lilies in it...seemed to work nicely, got a couple flowers out of it

But i was advised to not use liquid ferts too soon as they can lead to algae blooms because if the rooted plants aren't utilizing the nutrients in the water, the waterborne algae surely will- at least untill the rooted plants are established- but why go through green water if it may be preventable?

I plan to put together a DIY Co2 dosing system based on the design that can be seen here (the first illustrated design) :
http://www.qsl.net/w2wdx/aquaria/diyco2.html

but there's really no sense in setting it up untill i have plants that will need it.

As for the substrate, i don't understand all of what plants need and how the EcoComplete stacks up, but i was advised that it would save me from having to do the guesswork of blending substrate myself or of even locating sources for the ingredients and then calculating the recipe to make a balanced product that may or may not be as good- especially if i goof something up, which in my case is all too likely But the EC stuff did seem to have good reviews and some people i have spoke to online who have been keeping planted tanks for a fair amount of time, they had a favorable opinion of the stuff, and that opinion was based on their comparisons with their own personal formulations, seemed good enough for me

Thats it so far i think

Thanks! The reasons I'm asking is because I'm deciding what product lines to carry for my FW section... Seachem is local and I'll be carrying that, but looking for other options too.

I'm not big on the stuff with the cartoon fish ... IME their test kits for SW are junk, so I'm not wasting my time on their FW stuff. I'll check into Wardeys. I have used Red Sea for SW test kits and found them to be accurate compared to Seachem tests, so I've decided to carry RS FW tests. Seachem doesn't make a FW kit... although their tests will work for FW or SW - except for pH because it only measures from the high 7s and up.

A friend whose reef I've minded while he's on vacation, has several awesome FW planted tanks too. He liked Seachem's line of plant supplements.

Looking for any other feedback

Jenn
