well most of those plastic ponds you get at hardware stores usually arent deep enough for the fish to last the winter.

I installed a 300 gal rubbermaid stock tank in ground, it's 28" deep. A very nice pond if I do say so myself. My giant goramis are a hoot.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

If you wanted to do an upflow barrel full of lava rock that's good, but not necessary at all.

As long as you have a decent pump in it to keep up with areation, and a plant or two, you'll be OK.

My current pond system has a waterfall powered by a Quietone 4000 (~1000gph) and no filter, it's crystal clear even in late summer. I have some lilies and elephant ears too.
