Help Please re Discus

Hello all,

I am looking for some advice....I am so sorry for the essay.

Sooo here is what happened, I started off with a small tank 2 years ago and last christmas upgraded to a 27 gallon tank, I have had over the last 2 years fish like Neons, Danios, Platies and Kuhli loaches. I set up my new tank last Christmas and have left it very low stocked to settle in, I decided I wanted some bigger fish as a feature for my tank and had been thinking of Dwarf Gouramis....the fish shop persuaded me that I would be better off with a pair of young discus (captivity bred), that they were more hardy than the gouramis. Now I don't normally inpulse buy but I do confess I did trust their advice and brought them home.

I had told the fish shop I had danios which they said were fine, I realised quite quickly that they weren't and have rehomed them and platies with my friend, so now all I have our 3 kuhli loaches and 6 neons with my 2 discus. I have added bogwood, they have lots of plants and coverage. I keep my tank very clean, so everything is great in terms of stats and I am gradually changing over to purified water which I go get every week. Discus were very happy like puppies coming to the front of the tank whenever I came in the room, swimming up and down, feeding out of my hand, everyone happy.

I have had for 10 weeks now, however, last week, I noticed one of the discus has been hiding more and darkened, sometimes light, sometimes dark, which I know is one of their traits, but you know when something doesn't feel right.... Spoke to the fish shop took photos to try and work out what could be wrong, cannot see anything on fish but on their advice have ordered wormer plus which will help if it is internal etc, which should be here tomorrow, he did ask me if the other one was bullying him, I said no never seen that.

So today I have been sat here watching and he/she came swimming towards me all light coloured begging for food again, so I thought it must be better. Later I noticed the other discus give it a slight nudge and it darkened then they stayed side by side. It has now gone back into hiding. So hard to work out why? Whether the discus is poorly or other discus is bullying, so where they seemed to be getting along very well, now not sure about this or is there always a pecking order, is this normal behaviour?

Going to give the wormer plus tomorrow and see if that changes the discus in hiding. I would love to get a bigger tank and get 4 but I don't have the money at the moment. So I don't know what to do, whether ( sigh!) I should take them back to the fish shop, as they admitted they shouldn't have sold me 2 or get a third....

Please let me know your thoughts....Thank you for your time in reading this.

Elaine

Discus and other cichlids change colors quite a bit. I have kept african cichlids that did the same thing. Discus are however pretty sensitve to water parameters. A discus will get pretty big for a 27 and if they are a pair may bully everything else in the tank. IMO you would have been much better off with the dwarf gouramis.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Hello, thank you for your reply, I took them back today, so much happier that I did, they shouldn't have sold me 2 on their own and I tried my hardest, with parameters etc, but personality came into it, the one was really pushing the other one around today, so big lesson learnt for me and they have told the other staff not to sell in 2s.

Thank you for your kind reply jenglish.
