Question

Green Spotted Puffer

When I was but a wee lad my father had a 25 gallon freshwater tank with swords and danios. We went to the fish store and I saw the cutest fish I've ever come across. Well the store sold it to us. Well as I now understand Green Spotted Puffers don't do well in FW tank while only being fed flake.
Well now (many years later) I have a better understanding of the requirements of these fish and still think they are cool, however I do have some questions.
I'd like to set up a brackish tank of around 45-60 gallons, but since I'm a university student living with my parents I don't have alot of room for fish tanks. So without dragging this out anymore I am curious if these guys are okay living a solitary life and would a 15 or 20 gallon tank be big enough for one of these to be happy.
Thanks!

yes, but i'd get two.... they can handle full fresh to full salt and will eat a variety of foods- greedily.

mine get flake and frozen foods mostly and sometimes fresh bits of seafood. they don't get too big- mine are about 3-4 years old and are under 3" long....

they can get agressive to milder tempered fishes so i do think they are best kept to themselves- or with other fast moving fish that won't chase them either.

But i'd get more than one, a single one will get bored- they are too curious a fish to subject to a life of solitary confinement, even three might be good (in a 20 gallon tank minimum) because they will chase eachother around- sometimes getting a bit too agressive, but the ones i have are like siblings that bicker here and there but never really get outright mean.

Mine like it if i drop something new (some tacky aquarium toy or piece of colored glass) into the tank every now and then, it fascinates them for a while and they will stare at it and approach it slowly....

mine are goofy, they have been pains in the butt at times, but worth keeping.

Thanks for the Reply,
My LFS sells these 23 gallon tanks which are three feet long. They are just short (height wise).
I'll have to check out the exact dimensions.
But if I could bother you some more....
what size tank do you keep yours in and how many do you have in this tank together.
Also do you feed them any special food to keep their beeks down.
Thanks again

lets see, they've moved around a lot and its been a long time since i bought them... when i first bought them (i bought the two together) i think i had them in a 10 gallon brackish (or fresh- i forget) tank, i got bored with that i think six months later and had them in my 46 bowfront salt tank for another 8 months or so... then they went back into a brackish 10gallon for a few months, then i started another 30 gallon salt tank, got bored with that, broke it down and made a sump for my salt tank out of it and they lived in there for a few weeks, and i bought a new 30 gallon made it into a freshwater planted, they were in there for a few weeks untill they ate one of my platies, so i dropped them back into the salt water sump where they live with a damsel and a cat shark.

They are hardy little guys and i'd have to say VERY adaptable. They have NEVER gotten sick through all that moving and disruption.

As far as beak problems, i don't know that i have had to do anything, i can see their little teeth, but they don't seem to have any overgrowth problem- i can't say that i've ever heard of that happening in puffers (i'm no expert by any means) but if it is a problem, they must be doing something to wear them down- maybe they shew on the shells and bits of crushed coral they come across in the tanks?

there was a website called www.chunkypuff.net that had all sorts of info on puffers- totally dedicated to it, but it was hacked last fall i think and she hasn't gotten back to fixing it yet, its such a shame to have lost all that info and for someone to be so mean on a fish website.

at any rate i hope this helps some
