Question

Garlic

Does garlic poweder work like garlic medicine? I have several fish that have scales and fins falling off. Not shure if its a few aggresive fish (wich i do have some) or something elses. Any Ideas? The scales fall of and leave white meat showing, they dont seem to be distressed by it. The fins are falling off, first the skin between the spikes then evently the spikes. Its affectin the top of the fishes and the tails. Some dont even have tails and dont seem to mind. Other fish are healthy and fine as could be.

ok, please list what fish are in the tank and if you have seen any agression.

I wouod actually start by raising the temp to 82-84 degrees and add some solar salt (like you use in a water softener) at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. this will help the build a slime coat.

Their are alot of fish, too many to list. It is mostly a communtiy tank. I have some kind of orange mollies that are side rammers. Also have a big bluegill but he is actualy one of the nicer fish exept when fed with blood worms. Then its get out of his way. I tried adding some reef salt in about a few weeks ago, does that work? What is the "slime coat". Should they be slimmy if i pic em up. Alot of them will alow me to touch em. The tank is at the head of my bed so they are ust to me.
Also I am currently runing a class C UV bulb over one of the filters to help sterlize the water.

yes those are scales that come off from fighting. Garlic will help them eat more which in turn will boost their immune system. however I would be more worried about secondary infections . Medication to help prevent secondary infections in freshwater systems is good. I think MELIX is a good product that is natural and not classified as a chemical. You can also buy freshwater antibiotics.

Would more hiding spots help them be less tertitorial. They are crammed in a 15 gal tank (standard shape). Before that they lived in a 1'h 1'w 4'l tank (30 gal). I had to take em out cuze the tank had leaks in the silcon. just havent had time and money to redo it with new sand.

yes, if you can give them more places to establish territory then it will help. don't use sea salt, use solar salt. it is a closer match to the natural salt found in fresh water.
