Because of the way they are bread they often die fast, however if you get a male and female they also breed fast so the trick is to get a bunch of babies before the male dies. Then the babies (since they are not raised in a sterile envrioment full of meds) will be much hardier.
They are really cool fish, I bought some years ago, when I first started and still have a bunch of the babies on something like their 50'th generation

i love fancy guppies. they generally don't live more than a couple years, i think its just a metabolisim thing, they basically live to make babies and they do that a few times and its mostly over.
i have about 5 big males and 4 females.... normally its better to have more girls (so the boys don't chase them to death) but i've had a hard time finding a lot of really nice females that havn't been obviously treated with hormones to make them appear almost as colorful as males.

They tend to die fast because they are bread in a stearile envryoment, they don't develop a good immune system as fry and theirfore are very prone to whatever. That is what was said in "Ecology of the planted aquariam a scientific treatisy" anyway. The book said it better though.

i have them in a mixed community lightly planted tank of 30 gallons. i have platys and a male betta with 4 female bettas, some glofish danios, an african butterfly fish and a pair of cory cats, and a lone rosy barb that was dropped off at work and needed a home.
i have a few melon sword plants and some anubias in a prepared planted tank substrate and i filter with a basic hang-on filter....a marineland duo and just use the basic carbon/floss inserts.
