Cloudy Water

My friend at work has water that constantly is getting cloudy in his freshwater tank. He has a HOB filter and changes out the filter cartridge about every two weeks.

They tried cleaning and water changes and the water keeps getting murky.

Can the gravel substrate be doing the equivalent of spitting out phosphates or something. I don't know BOO about freshwater systems. His tank sounds like a 20L or something.

Well....... does it have an under gravel filter? how old is the tank? if it does have an under gravel filter.. when was the last time it was vacumed? if its a new tank.. it might take it a week or two to cycle.. how many fish are in the tank...how much does he feed the tank? these are the first things to ask him.. then post his reply.. i would be glad to help.

How's it stocked? Also, the media has a lot of bacteria on it, and when that gets tossed out those bacteria go out with it. That was the biggest problem I had when I first started keeping fish. And is why I hate hobs, lol! Has he checked to see if it is ammonia problems?

My partners boss just called me this am with this same problem. Her tank is only a week old 2 fish and is very cloudy. I suggested a small water change and to run active carbon. I also suggested not adding any more fish for a cpl of weeks and to cut back on the feeding. Like Perry I really dont know that much about fresh. Ive had fresh water tanks but that was like 15 yrs ago.
