Cichlid & Substrate

My buddy has a 55 gallon tank with one Cichlid. He'd asked me if it was common for Cichlids to move around substrate. I thought I'd post the question on here and relay the responses. Seems Cichlid is picking at substrate made of, small, pee sized pepples, and making piles. And if this is common, what do you guys do to keep underwater gravel system from being exposed??

Oh yes, very commen for almost all Cichlids, they are making a nest. My Oscar spent most days, all day doing this, doug all the way down to the glass bottom and then got mad he couldn't go any further. There is really nothing you can do, they just like to dig, it's in there nature.

I agree with the above post 90 percent of cichlids do dig thats thier way of makin a nest and showing territory in the tank. If you have a m and f look forward to babies and more and more tanks hehhehe
