Cool

Birth Control for Guppies

Don't suppose this exists? i have a ton of tiny little guppies now. other than feeding them to my puffers..... well i don't want to do that. Can't remember how long it takes befor ethey are big enough to bother trying to sell to the LFS

these are nice blue/blacks with this flamejob in their tails, quite striking actually.

wish i could get pics but they move so darned fast.

but i need to do a waterchange except they are so small i don't want to siphon them. and if i disturb the plantings the little ones will try to get away and the gourami will eat them.

how long till they grow to adult size or close to it?

Ya can put a net over the end of the gravel vac tube so as not to suck out the babies. Maybe that will help with the water change. As far as birth controld pull all the females if ya can heheheh

Birth control for guppies......

Once they have mated once, female guppies hold sperm in their bodies for future broods for a very long time...(how long depends on the fish and sizes of her broods)....in other words, there can be a lot of apparently 'imaculate conceptions' going on even with no male animals in the tank. BTW, female guppies can get preggers while still little more than fry-about 1/4" long, so she's most likely pregnant when you buy here regardless of whether or not she's only been kept with females in the stores. Actually, if you don't want more babies, then Jeff has the best solution....but then you get left with a bunch of really, really horny boys bothering all the other fish in the tank and each other (the guppies just don't care about species anymore as long as there is a convenient substitute). I found the solution that problem was to keep one or two female bettas in the tank. (males bettas tend to view male guppies as competitors) Bettas will search out and eat any fry small enough to eat. Good luck.

One blue lobster in the tank with the guppies is balanced perfectly.

Some large Glass Ghost Shrimp will eat them. They will also clean the tank.

You should be able to sex them @ around 4 weeks. If you don't want another generation seperate the males and females. If you really want to control the births you can sell the mother and all the adult females in your current display. If they have been around a male at all odds are that they are all pregnant. You can keep a few seperate males and females (3 females to 1 male) to keep your diplay population up. That is if you want to set up a breeding program for them.
