African Cichlids anyone???

Hey you all! I have a breeding pair of African Convict Cichlids in a 20g. They keep reproducing, but the Dad keeps eating them(i guess he never got a book about parenting )

Any ideas on how to succesfully seperate him from the kids?

How old are the parents? Somrtimes the cichlids will eat the first few batches. Some never get it but most do. You can pull them and run a airstone over them the keep the bacteria from growing on the eggs. Ya can also put Methanol blue in the water to also help. HTH

i only seemed to have luck with the mouth brooders. the others would do the same thing. i would usually remove the male and let the female do her best.

are they alone in the tank or is this in the main tank?

Well sure you can go to another, bigger forum, but then whats the point of us opening this one to share experiences and solve problems.
FWIW it's OK to quote a thread from another board that directly relates to the topic at hand, but just generally linking, esp for someone who has just joined up, tends to look like recruiting, hehehe

Ditto Doug,
On the fry eating deal, how about working toward making the breeders feel "safer" ie: blocking off some or most of the tank glass,,,a lot of breeding/spawn watching fish will eat their fry thinking they are "saving" them,,,

back in the ol' days, when i was breeding Rainbow cichlids, i used to put black cardboard on all the glass w/ a little spot in one side , so i could spy on them , and not spook them as much,,,seemed to work

Oh BTW the convicts are not african cichlids, the look similar to a Frontosa which is an african, convicts are considered southwest cichlids, and their water chemistry is very different than african rift lake chemistry, Umm just pointing that out... also you can go to extreme measures to seperate the fry, but you will soon tire of it, I have approx 60 fry a month that make it, and its so much trouble to catch them that I just let them be eaten, and wait till the survivors get bigger and give them to the LFS for credit. Unless you are willing to go to the trouble to set up breeder tanks and move the adults around alot its just easier to let em be a highly nutritious snack, cause youll prolly get a spawn every month anyway !!!!
