It varies wildly with the type of tank. What I do with mine, is weekly waterchanges of 50% (I dose ferts and declor at this time), feed the fish daily, and topoff when required. Past that the normal checks of fish health, plant trimming when required and monthy cleaning of the canister filters. I also have a pressurized CO2 system that requires refilling about every 6 months. I spend allot of time looking at it from my couch .
My 10 gallon tank is setup by Diana's book, I do waterchanges every 4 months and clean the filter at that time, I also have an auto feeder for the fish, and try to avoid trimming unless the fish are having a ruff time swimming (I encourage emergant growth). The only thing I regularly do to this tank is topoff.
Check out that fourm that my thread was in, it is locked now but should be popping back up in APC which is another great source of information. www.plantgeek.com is a sight that should not be overlooked either. Most of these places will advocate the use of florite, or eco-compleate, and regular fert dosing but I got tired of all that so I don't run my tank that way anymore. I am not saying it is wrong, quite the contrary it is a great way to run a tank, just not for me.
Once you find that book, if you have questions you can also talk to the author when her new fourm is up, she is very nice and will answer questions.
HTH,
Whiskey

Some SERIOUS eye candy, you can also go back to the different size tanks in this contest and previous years.

Whiskey,
What kinda of ferts you dosing? Flourish? or your own blend of liquid fert or another?
I've been following Flourish's EI schedule and it seems a lil excessive.
Also any pics of your Diana style 10g? I'm a sceptic.
Sorry bout the Hi-jacking.

I dose chemicals mixed up into a stock solution. I dose very little for my tank size, but there are plenty of nutrients in that soil for the plants to get the rest.
I use Floursh Iron,
CSM-b trace
K2SO4
KNO3
Fleet Enema (Pure Phosphate, though a little embarrassing to buy)

Ill be honest with you, it's not much to look at, because I haven't trimmed in 4 months. The plants are long, and over grown, but both the plants and fish are healthy, one thing I regret was adding Duckweed to this tank
