55g African filtration question
Hi All, Got a question from my cousin,,,,
55 gallon African community tank,,6 fish , largest prob 4"
normal HOB filtration,w/ HOT Magnum 250 for back-up cleaning,,
No probs now with the tank,,
Here's the question:
He's planning on moving,,and putting the tank in a new location,,
using it as a divider,,both sides viewable,,,
and was wondering about filtration, since the HOB filters won't be used then,,,,
Would a Magnum 350 be enough?or the likes,,,
Would a trickle-wet/dry in the stand be a good option?
either way , he will have hoses etc. off on one side,,,(Mag or Wet/dry)
If the wet-dry way, prob use a hang on overflow also,,,(no drilling on this one,,)
just wondering what you all can come up with, for filtration on a African tank, with out too much to be seen off the tank,,,
Money is not a huge concern, but he's not the "full blown" kinda fish nut WE are ,LOL,,,,so the high end route is prob not the way to go in this case,,,
Thanks,,,

Hey Jeff
He could run a trickle filter with no problems. Put the overflow boxes on one end or the other. If thats not a option I would double up on the 350 and have one on each end if possiable.
HOpe that helped and didnt throw a monkey wrench in it

I would,,,but i try to avoid adding more to my workload, helping my cousin,,,,
I do a lot at his Canine training center as it is,,,and he's got no problem buying a ready made unit,,,,even tho he can prob make one himself also,,,,
He kinda told me ,,,"let me know what i need",,and i'm trying to go that route,,,
I did a load of work in his last two buildings(remodel/electrical work),,and he's hopefully(for him) getting a 10 acre spot to run the business,,and live in the house already on the property,,,so i think i'll be busy enuf fairly soon without adding more work LOL

On the filtration, I was thinking of having him get a Tidepool wet/dry W/a overflow skimmer,,,, sound like a good idea? also, what brand/size pump to run this thing?
He might run other Ph's or the HOT magnum for water movement too,,
Thanks

Sounds good. I'm not a huge fan of the Tidepool, but they are decent. They have a big huge bio-wheel instead of bio-balls and they have several trays for floss/media.

Yup Jenn, just looking for ease of use,and something simple for him , so i don't have to pop over there all the time to work on/maintain it,,,,
He's not the big hobbyist like most of us here,,,I try to keep him in the K.I S.S.
(Keep It Simple Stupid) club,,,less headaches for me,,,
just seems easier to have him buy this, and get to filterin',,,
than explain how a real wet/dry works,,,and how to maintain
He's got a bio wheel on a HOB filter now,,,just figgered i'd keep it the same "family" for him,,,,,
(Plus the wholeseller's got 'em on sale this month,,),LOL
Thanks

BTW: I went to one of my LFS's to get some frozen food, this is the place that had the Tidepool's in use,,,after talking to the guy about them, he said to use the Aqua-clear overflow box, instead of the Tidepool brand,,,he said the T-P ones were super loud,,,and like the AQ ones better,,,and they are cheaper to boot,,,
and he recommended a Mag 5 to run the W/D,,,,
