10 gallon Cichlid tank?
Is it possible to house african cichlids in a 10 gallon tank? If so, what kind and how many?
My daughters 10 gallon tank suffered a catastrophic heater failure killing all but 2 of her fish. I was toying with going in another direction with the tank. Maybe cichlids. Space issues limit us to a 10gal in her room. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks - Joe

I wanted to do the same thing with a 40G at one point and I was told it was too small for all but one variety,.. a bright yellow kind that likes to dig - but I can't remember the name of it.

Yep,.. That's it.
I wouldn't put it in a 10G though.

Brichardi (sp) may do ok in a 10. or you can look into blue ram or apistogramma dwarf cichlids. Brichardi I believe is the only one of these that is african. Its been a long time since I kept africans. HTH

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Well, I think I have found cichlids suitable for a 10 gal. Brevis cichlids can be housed in a tank as small as 5 gallons. I will probably get 2 females and 1 male. According to what I have read, you can have as many as 4 in a 10 gallon as long as you put a rock formation in the middle of the tank so one pair cant see the other.

Rams aren't African. But they are small. BUT notoriously hard to keep. A 10g system is just way to suceptible to param fluctuation to consider it unless you are willing to spen 2 hour a day tending to the tank.
Yellow labs or Labichhromis will get too big for a 10g. I mean, if you intend to keep a school of them. And IME, they do best in groups of 5 specimins or larger. And you can't really appriciate the them fully without seeing their social dynamic.
You could keep a mated pair of Jeweled Cichlid in a 10g. Shell spawning cichlids aren't a bad choice. Baut as with the Jeweled's, you are better off gettin a mated pair.

Well, it only took almost 2 months, 1 month of research and getting the tank ready. 1 month waiting for the LFS to get them, but I picked up 2 N. Brevis Chiclids today.
Beautiful little fish. They seem more than happy in a 10g tank. Only time will tell.

It's been 2 weeks and so far everything seems good. I have not seen any fighting at all. They do have a lot of places to hide. Also, I used sand on the bottom so they are constantly digging keeping themselves occupied.
