DIY refugium

Hello everyone, I have been tossing this idea around about making my own ref.. I have a 55 gal.w/ live rock/sand protein skimmer....... and have an empty 10 gal. tank that i want to use for it. Would it work if i just put miracle mud in the tank say 2" with calapra plants syphon the water into the 10 gal, and just put it back into the 55? with out there being anyother compartments...?would this work?

yes, that would work fine. you would still need an overflow to keep the tank from flooding the refugium if the power goes out. you would also not have to worry about siphon problems. another thing to do would be to put the refugium above the 55. use a small PH to get the water in the refugium. then drill a whole in the side of the refugium near the top and let the water overflow back into the 55. this will keep the critters from getting chopped by the pump. either way i would keep the water flow as low as you can. i would not go over 100gph if you can.
