MH ballast

What is the diference between the magnetic and electric ballast and which one is best to get for a 175w retro kit?
I have a 24" Coralife fixture now, is it posible to replace the 24" bulbs for like a 36" bulb? taking the wires and stuff out of the fixture of course or is it like the MH where I need to match the ballast to the bulb?

I don't work there but I can tell you there are a lot of differences. Electronic is a lot more expensive but can supposedly save some running costs. I think it may take years to payback so not sure that matters. If you do some searches on the web there are a lot of helpful articles
