Bad Bad Bad, http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/smile.gif These Crabs will eat your live sand bed, thats what they do, unless you have someway to replenish your sand bed, it will do damage to the environment you are trying to create. Please Please Please return this crab to the fish store you got it from, your tank is only 6 months old, and it could be very harmful to the sandbed you described in your tank specs. Sorry to be so harsh, but I almost made the same mistake, and I know how important my tank is and how hard it is to get the right system setup and stable.

Exclamation

Well, after I let him go into my tank, he just went nuts. He ran around the tank walking into anything in his way. He caused almost every one of my corals close up, and scared my fish to death. I was hoping he would settle down a little bit. But he never did. I went to go get a soda, and when I returned, he was in the deadly clutches of my condy anemone. He must have swam right into it. I could see at that point that these guys do not belong in a reef tank. He has since moved to a 20 gal breeder until I can find a different home for him. (Like back in my LFS tank! http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/wink.gif) Well, I guess I have nobody to blame but myself! This is just another mistake made in this hobby, I'm sure with many more to come. I will be sure to do my homework next time, and never buy on impulse (yeah right http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/smile.gif) Thanks for your help.

Question

Horseshoe Crab

Hi all,

Just went toa LFS today and I did something that I shouldn't have. I bought a horseshow crab without doing research first. I know, I know, I'm bad. But the LFS guy told me it was 100% reef safe. Could someone give me a little more info on it? And does anybody else have one in their reef? Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately, the LFS wasn't totally straight w/ you. Horeshoe crabs are a real P.I.T.A. - they'll dig in your sand, knock rocks and stuff over and generally disrupt a lot of things (kinda like what my school teachers use to always say about me). I think they'll eat the critters in your live sand too. On top of all that, they grow way too big for an average tank - I think they get to be about 2' long. They're not really even crabs; I think they're arachnids (spiders). If I were you, I'd take it back.

Question

Hmm...I was watching Discovery channel a few hours ago and they mentioned Horseshoe crabs have blue blood.....this is because their blood contains Copper....rather than iron...which makes blood red....

if your horshecrab died...would it wipe out your 'non copper loving population' or would the copper stay bound to the blood?

hmm...what a weird question http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/smile.gif

thanks

Interesting question, I rememeber seeing articles titled"Bluebloods of the sea"
My guess is the way the copper is bound up in the bioprocess its not as harmful as free copper would be, other wise the typical bottom scavengers wouldnt be able to recycle it.
Maybe TDWyatt will give an explanation, or perhaps Horge http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/smile.gif

My guess is that the copper would be released as the blood breaks down. I would also think this could be a problem for inverts if the creature was large enough. Hopfully know has had this happen before.

My LFS (Aqua Serene) tried to sell me a lovely 4 inch specimen of horseshoe crab...fortunately I had already read a extensive article about them in Aquarium Fish... apparently not only do they ruin your sand bed, but generally they starve to death as well, unless you have a massive tank to put them in. Cool critter, but best left in the ocean, IMHO. http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
