Cool

dance of the peppermint shrimp

in the two months since i added my two peppermint shrimp they have totally decimated my aptaisia population.

i have long known that they've been doing their deed, but i just now had the chance to witness it. he was a little shy at first because he could see that i was watching him as he gingerly crawled along a rock, picking at it. i could tell that he had sensed something yummy was nearby because he started to prance when he was about two inches from a polyp. once he locked onto it he jumped up and pounced on the little bugger, his little claws franticlly digging into the rock. the aptasia was in his tummy in about three eyeblinks. it was so cool!

after he devoured the polyp, he was dancing around with the reckless abandon i used to dance with at dead shows. i swear he was applauding himself.

holy cow, that was one happy shrimp.

i bought pepe the peppermint shrimp for my 10g to eat the aiptasia off my macro algae and he must have not liked my tank cuz he didnt seem to be eating it, and then he died a week later. water params are okay with 0 ammonia and nitrite, ph 8.2, 78 degrees, but salinity suspect, as it was high and i had been adding a bit more RO every other day to bring it down slowly. measuring it has been hard as my glass and swing arm are reading 1.024 and 1.030 respectively. im not sure I will try pepps again until i have a refractometer to get an exact reading on my sg. although i really like my cleaner shrimp that is in my 30g, he's doing great. good to hear that you guys like peppermints, i will try them again later!

How weird!

Ok so maybe Pepe isn't the most original name for a pepermint shrimp but that was mine's name too!

for those who read my earlier post in this thread, you will remember Pepe the peppermint shrimp who met his demise in my 10g tank....I have two triumphant words:

.....PEPE LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LONG LIVE PEPE!!!!!!!!!!

you would think by now that I would come to realize that crustaceans molt, and i had just found his molt. tonight i was observing the tank and i saw him picking around the substrate from behind a shell. I WAS SO HAPPY! yaaaaaay, Pepe!!!!

Thank goodness for moltings. LOL.. I have actually thought for sure that my emerald crab or peppermint shrimp died and sometimes, even though I know that they molt, it throws me for a loop a bit.
