Getting anenomes to stay put

Any suggestions on tricks to get anenomes to stay in a particular area? I've added a few new anenomes to my tank and they generally will stay where initially put for a day or two but then start roaming the tank until they find a place they are comfortable. I'm trying to get them to stay on top of a rock in the center of the tank.

All suggestions appreciated.

Welcome to TRT, wdeertz!!

I see you registered a while ago, but have been quiet

Depends on the type of anemone. Example... carpets and long tentacles seem to like a smooth flat surface to squat on - I find tht using a small piece of 1" pvc pipe makes a good "sleeve"for them, bubble tips like to place their pedal disc in a crevice in the rock.

They will wander around until they find a place that suits their needs, there is not much you can do except try to provide that "happy place" and hope they think so too.

Hope this helps,

Jenn

I found that embarassing the anemones in front of their anemone friends is a good way to get them to listen to you...

Good luck,

AEB

it really depends on what kind you have, supplying us with that info will help a lot. I have always had good luck with getting aneomes to stay where I put them, so far I have placed 3 anenomes and they haven't moved an inch.
What I usually do is try to figure what they would like, then I watch them closely and see which way they are moving(usually toward a nice current), So I then bring the current a little closer to them tell they stop.
Now if its light they crave I just take the rock they are on and move it up tell I see them stay put, remembering to keep the flow the same all the way up.

This take some time but I have always been able to get a good spot for mine and they seem to like it since they stay put there, and I have had them split recently.

good luck
JR

Types of anenomes

I don't have the best identification book but I believe one is a Magnificent sea anenome (Heteractis magnifica) Flores Indonesia, it has long tenacles with yellowish tips. The other is a carpet anenome which in my book looks like a gigantic sea anenome (Sticholdactyla gigantea. Both of these sit comfortably on top of a ledge.

The other 3 are all long tenacles with a more tubular base. One is purple, one is pink and the other is whitish with pinkish tips. None of these 3 will stay on top of a ledge and gravitate towards the substrate between two mounds of live rock.

I've attached photos of the anenomes I have in case anyone can better identify the types that I have. Since the system will only let me attach one file per message I'll attach in 3 separate postings.

I'd appreciate ideas that I can try to get the long tenacle anenomes to stay on top of a ledger.

In particular I'm interested to hear how anyone uses PVC pipe as a base. I've thought of doing this but wasn't sure how well it would work. If someone is able to use a 1 inch pipe then the anenomes must be small as I estimate I would need at least a 4 inch piple to get the base of the anenomes inside.
