bubble tip anemone question
will a bubble tip anemone release toxins into a tank if they have been injured (smashed tentacles)? i know they do if they die, but is there any other time they will?

I have had a bubble get torn apart before...nothing happened to my tank..(it was a 20 gal), and I had the same bubble year later get mushed by a powerhead..nothing happened to my tank (75g). So, I think if it was to just get hurt, your tank should be fine. How big is your tank? What kind of filtration do you have on it?

i have a 29g. it has 40lbs of live rock, a 4in sand bed, it has a red sea protein skimmer and a tetratec fitler. i'm asking because all my fish died within 3 days after the anemone was injured!

Hmm...since I have had my anenome get injured before, aswell as chopped up and scattered across my tank with no ill affects, I would wonder if it was the anenome. The only thing I could think of would be maybe something died somewhere causing a high ammonia spike. Did you test your water after the BTA got injured? Had you added anything prior to their deaths? Do you have corals? did they ever act unhappy?

I don't know forsure but:
anenome produce toxins to kill prey, If one got chopped up and a fish eat a piece that was floating by would that hurt the fish?
Maybe your problem...

Hmm..I knew of anenome's stingy fish with their nematocyst(sp?) to catch and eat, but havn't heard of them releasing toxins. So, honestly don't know on that one.

Well thats what I had in mind when I said toxins, The stingy stuff!
If a fish were to eat a piece of a tentacle with stingy stuff on it would it die?

In my 125 gal reef, my bta "dissappeared" withot a trace". Aside from two very unhappy clowns, there were no ill effects to any of the other tank inhabitants (4 Chromis, 2 Tangs, 1 Wrasse, and 1 Rabbit).

the only new addition was the bubble tip anemone, the bta got injured while i was placing him into my tank (the rocjk he was on slipped out of my hand while trying to place in tank). i did check the water and eveything was normal for my 29g tank. ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites are zero, temp is 78 and ph is 8.3. so like i said the only thing that changed was the anemone being added and getting injured. just so you know i have 130 watt pc lighting for the tank, my lfs (inland aquatics) said this would work great for what i want in my tank. the bta came from them also.

This has happened to me...
yes, if the anemone lost a piece of itself etc, in the injury it can ne poisionus to the tank. Especially a small tank.
I have had them for years but long ago in a 29 gallon my intake got the best of one of em and it died over a weekend when I was gone. All but one fish dead (and it wished it had). I did a 50% h2o change and started over with foam on the intake etc,.,,,
not sure if that helps but I have seen it happen.
