new butterfly-needs some TLC
This was a rescue from the wholesaler. She knows how much I like fish, so she gave this one to us for free. She was going to euthanize soon. She said he was eating..and they feed mostly mysis. I'm hoping lots of Selcon and good meaty foods will help him heal. Do someo f you fish pathology experts (ahem) have any advice? He is a Pakistan Butterfly...one gorgeous fish. He was beat up by other fish in the tank. His left side is clear of injury...his right side is very bad as you can see. He has no signs of ich or other illness.

Brooke I hope you didnt put your poor little butterfly in your reef tank. If you did iam sure it will be healthy on polyps!!!!
They love polyps all kinds the big polyps the ones on sps you name the polyps they will cetainly eat them. Keep us informed on how your rescue is going. I know they will eat mysis shrimp and any frozen meaty food that will fit into its mouth like brine and any fish, shrimp etc. GOOD LUCK

No...he's in our FO. I know I should have put him in a hospital tank, but we don't really have one. Plus, we have the big monster UV on the FO.

I agree - feed the little guy and hope for the best. We resuced a little yellow tank that had been beaten up pretty badly by a trigger - he's kind of silly looking, as his new fins are white and not yellow, but he's a healthy, happy fish now.
Good luck - what a beautiful fish! Hooray for second chances.

Ahem yourself Missie!
I love those fish, they're beautiful. With the UV you guys have and proper feeding, I would guess he's going to be just fine. The wounds look superficial, just a little flesh and scales mostly. What you have to worry about in closed systems is a secondary bacterial infection, my guess is that you won't have one.
If you do, there's a old time remedy that works just about as good as anything else. Dab/swab it with mercurochrome. Don't get it near the eyes or gills.
If you start to see the fish get a bend in the middle or go down fast, that's usually a septicemia and out of the range that you need to be trying to treat.
Keep me posted, I love those guys.
Jerel

It a better preventive than a cure. Getting them to eat enough of it when they don't feel good. Then the whole introducing antibiotics and resistance. Usually it's more of a "feel good" thing.
Now if you want to talk intramuscular and sub-cutaneous injections??

Thanks Jerel..that makes me feel better. So far everyone seems to be getting along. He and the angel have done a bit of "displaying" but seem to ignore each other most of the time. He's a pretty big fish..about 5". He didn't eat any mysis last night. If he doesn't eat tonight I'll go get some mussels for him. He has been visiting the cleaner shrimp quite a bit. The wound did get a bit bloodier during the evening, so I think the shrimp are cleaning him up. We'll hope for the best. I'll keep you all posted.
Brooke

It's just so hard to control the dosage. Now don't get me wrong, for some things it's just fine. I don't think this fish will be a problem with the way that Brooke and Jon have that system set up though. Unless there's something else going on that doesn't show in the picture.

Brooke congrats on trying to save this beautiful fish. I think the cleaner shrimp should help in the long run in healing the wound. I think the shrimp will clean it of decayed tissue and thus bring more blood to the area for healing. We wish you well and the fish as well.

Brooke, I so love these pakistani butterfly fish. Have you tried aiptasia?? My LFS has a 180 ecosystem tank that he has devoted to butterfly's and had a pair of them in this system. They are voracious aiptasia eaters. He was asking people to bring in rocks with aiptasia on them to offer cleaning the rocks of the aiptaisa.
Maybe this butterfly might began eating with a couple of aiptasia, then mysis.
I have already moved all the sps corals to my 180 and my 120 is going to be a butterfly tank. These guys are the first on my list. They are such a beautiful fish, I wish you good luck, Brooke but I bet this fish makes it.

Just in case, be very watchful of advancing condition of the wound. This looks very typical of a parasitic infection that butterflys can get, and it can spread, or, even if apparently healed up in time, can reappear again overnight.
