mutilated pearlscale butterfly
This really upset me. I put in a pearlscale butterfly 2 days ago and I noticed some bruising on his dorsal fin and upper body a day after. It was still pretty strong and ther are no predators in my tank. I moved it to my quarantine athis morning and found it dead when I came home in the afternoon. The bruising had escalated to something that looks like a shark bite which took out at least a centimeter square chunk out of the upper part of his body! Bones where still intact. Seems like the scales and meat just rotted away. It couldnt have been a predator because I took out all my damsels before putting in the butterfly. I also discovered my blenny dead a few minutes ago. I strongly suspect my water is not yet fully cycled (4 wks. since I put in LR). I'm getting a test kit this wk (they are quite expensive here) to check my water conditions. My perculas are ok. So is my mandarin, banded eel and hatchet fish. Could nitrates do this kind of damage to a butterfly?

could it be the banded eel? I don't think it's anything in my tank because most of the damage happened in my quarantine where it was all alone. ssems like my water "burned" his body. Acidic water maybe?

well if a chunk was biten out like you said I would suspect something in the tank eel is a possibility, you need the test kiyt to determine the water quality,I hope you are using ro or ro/di water.

Positive on the RO/DI water. We have a monster unit servicing our entire household and our supply comes from a 40ft. deepwell pump. keeping my tank fishless for the meanwhile. Maturation period is on its 4th week.

Was the bruise red? Could it have been a bacterial infection?
Vibrio can act VERY fast.

If it is 4 weeks old nothing should have been added until a test kit had been purchased and water tested,to insure the health of the creatures.

Sounds like a classic case of Vibrio to me.

Anybody have any info on vibrio? Counter measures perhaps? Tank is fishless for the time being. Snails, shrimp , and my banded eel are doing well though.
I don't believe my eel could have inflicted that "bite." Never shown any agressive tendencies towards tankmates. Beak is too small and primarily eats algae and pellets.
