Whats in my overflow

sorry for the bad pic kinda hard to get a good shot but these white things are all in my overflow and look kinda like sea aquirts or sponge any idea what they are? should I remove them? They feel soft and will rub right off. Casey

You may have a small species of sponge, probably Leucilla,Leucandra, Scypha = Sycon, or Clathrina. These small sponges are often missed in nature due to their small size, but they are usually seen in our small glass boxes.

Are they ok to leave in? I looked at one up close and it has a mouth like a sea squirt.

I have had those for months. I heard they were something called a strumpit. I dunno, supposed to be good for exporting bacteria.

They are sponges Casey you might even see them in your sump. It is ok to leave them in You will ususally find them in dark places and thats why you dont usually see them in your tank another reason they dont appear in tanks often cause some crabs and fish will munch on them

They are indirectly beneficial in that they remove silicates from the water column to build the colony structure. This will limit the availability of silicates to diatoms for test construction (which will limit their blooms)

I have a million of those little sponges in my sump and they where in the protein skimmer until I cleaned it. They filter stuff out of the water, besides taking up silicates.
