Need some clam info (types of clams)

Hey everyone,

I think I'm going to take the plunge and get a clam. My tank should be fine with it (99% SPS, 4x400 watt MHs, calc reactor, Nielson reactor, 180 gallon tank).

Anyhow, from what I've read, a 3" clam is a good place to start (if you can afford it) as the lamps should provide most of it's nurishment. Is this correct?

Next question, what's the best type to start with? Does it really matter, is one easier or harder to keep? Any suggestions for aclimation, I've heard widely-varying tips.

thanks!

Chris

Chris, a squamosa would be a great clam to start with as would a derasa too. Anything smaller than a 3" clam might need to be supplementally fed til it got big enough to live off the zooxanthellae in it's mantle. Smaller mantle surface area thus not enough area to support the clam with lighting alone. These are both the easier species of clams to start with. The maxima and crocea are a little bit more lighting needy but you certainly have the light for any of the giant clam species.

I highly recommend Barry at www.clamdirect.com for healthy clams. Barry cherry picks any clams that he offers for sale. They are about the nicest colored I've seen. Especially this last batch of clams.

I think Sue meant to link to ClamsDirect

The funny thing is that clamdirect links up to a financial advisor...

Who knew what leaving out an S would do???? Reefkeeping and financial advising do not even belong in the same sentence.
