horseshoe crabs
i recently put 2 horseshoe crabs in my tank to help with the sand upkeep. they have disappeared. Does anyone have them in their tank and if so, how long do they bury themselves. should i expect to rarely see them or should i be worried and try to find them?

You just put them in? From what I have seen...but don't have any personal experience, horseshoe crabs like to stay burried. They feel more protected that way. Keep an eye out for any burrow trails that they might leave. If you don't see them after 4 days, then I would maybe poke around a bit to see if you find one. I hope this helps. Prayerfully someone else on here who has actually kept them will pipe in and offer real experience.

If I am correct horseshoe crabs can deplete your infauna in your DSB quite fast. Also in the wild they can grew quite large. I for one would not have one except in a very large tank with plenty of DSB area! JMO

I think it takes a while for them to grow... and I don't know about critters in the sand as when I had one I didn't care about what lived in the sand, only how it looked. They are cool and unusual critters, they like to burry themselves alot of the time, but mine would cruse about when he was unburried or just for the heck of it. We called him "darthvader" cause of his "helmet" Just make sure they don't lodge themselved between rocks... that's what happened to mine when I went to alaska...

lil off topic here but..... I've been wondering about something, horseshoe crabs blood is copper based (they've got purple blood), now if the crab was to somehow wound itself would there be enough copper in it's blood to affect the tank?

casey - what did they die from. did you see them often in your tank or did they just stay burried for the most part?
