EEEK!!! what is it!?!?

Ok I have pix that I will post later, when I figure out how...
But this morning I looked in my tank for some relax time and felt my blood pressure climb rather quickly!!! There was this "slug" on my beautiful green star polyps and he was munching!!! I am not sure he was actually eating the polyps yet as the lights were still off and there were no polyps out. I turned them on to get some pix and that thing was moving all over the place! Like some kind of demon racing snail!

It was pale and I could see that it did have a shell, very reminicent of an abalone shell, which had tan markings on it. The mantle was white and about double the diameter of the shell with long eye stalks (I think there were 4 or it was 2 eye stalks and a couple of feelers...) And it moved really fast! (I can not tell you how surprised I was at how fast it moved!)

I have never seen this thing before, but I added a rock yesterday with some very sad shrooms on it, so it's a possibility it came off this rock... does anyone think it's an abalone? Do they move fast? Or should I get really worried now? I should say that the pix that I got will not be that great as it was fast (didn't I say that before... )

I don't think it's an abalone, I had one for awhile and it was never _that_ fast. This is a shot in the dark, but maybe it's a chiton.

Well, first of all, how big is it? If it is small, about an inch or less, it could be a stomatella snail. Flat shell, brownish/tannish/whitish, these guys can really move too! Check those out and see if that's them. I can try to get a pic tonight when I get home. They are harmless and breed like rabbits - not to an outrageous amount, but if you have 2, give a couple months and you'll have 50. HTH

Chitons are pretty distinctive, they have segmented shells , lookin like roly poly bugs on steroids
Stomatella snails have the half shell that kinda looks like old style GI helmet
Nassarius are quite fast when foods around but tend to stay fairly close to the substrate.

wow gumhead that's him!!! How did you get a pic of that thing?
I found out that it was from the tank that the shrooms came from... grrr! So these things breed like rabbits huh? What do they eat? Is there anything that eats them? It's still small by the way, just about the size of a quarter.... how big do they get?
Geez I love saltwater... who said that thing about the box of chocolates in an earlier post?... Can't wait to see what comes out of the rocks next week...

wildthings44,
Stomatella are fantastic snails to have in your tank, you should not be growling . They are incredible algea eaters and can get places that 'normal' snails can't. They will breed to the point that their food will allow them to. If you don't want them, you could always send me some .

Thanks, I'll keep you in mind when I am overrun! Glad to know they aren't bad, but it still irritates me that I get some "coodie" from someone elses tank... it could have been bad. It reminds me of having a cold and sharing with someone else... except thankfully this cold isn't bad
