clam holes

i've noticed that several of the bigger clams that i've seen have a hole/tear in them. What do the clams use this hole for?

you must be talking about the siphon for water to go in and out to filter food.

Matt, all clams have incurrent syphon's and excurrent syphons. It's the in for them to filter feed from and out for, well you know.....
