Can I put a cucumber in my tank?
Hi all,
I have a 28 gallon bowfront with an attached refugium. The dimensions of the tank are 24" X 12-15" wide. The way I stacked the rocks, I'd say there is about 60% of the sand exposed.
Is this a big enough area for a small cuke? I'm tired of dirty looking sand. I don't have (or want) crabs and the 5 nassarius snails I added aren't doing much to turn the sand.
Not interested in stars either - too many scary stories.
Thanks,
Cherry

some cucumbers release poison into the tank if they die not sure which ones though. Maybe some cucumber experts will chime in.

i have about 50 nassarius snails as well as a bunch of others (cerith, astrea, margarita, etc)...i also have four fighting conchs...all in my 125 gal tank...(i dont keep any crabs either)
my DSB still wasnt clean enough so i added two atlantic black cukes from premium aquatics a few weeks ago...
they are very cool creatures...they ingest sand and "poop" out the debirs in little piles...very cool...
i had heard that the uglier cukes like i got, dont really foul the tank when they die like the really pretty ones...
my only problem....
i havent seen either cuke in about a week!...
no clue where they went...but if they are dead, ive seen no ill effects on my tank...
from what i read, they do seem to do alot of positive work...stirring the DSB...

I too have the black one in my 75. Have had him for a while and they do dissapear for days at a time but mine do come out while in the daylight. He seems to find a good spot and stay there for days lol. But he has gotten very large now but he stays on the bottom most of the time but does on a whim climb up the side of the glass. Have no idea how lol but he does!

Alf, I thought the ones with the tentacles were filter feeders... Now I'm confused (ok, so that's normal for me ) Are you seeing the white piles of sand behind it?
I know the safest ones are the black 'turd' and brown 'turd' cukes, but I'm not sure I have enough exposed sand to keep one well fed. How fast do they grow?

Well ive sat and watched my "turd" lolol eat the sand. Pretty cool to watch. And yea he does have a pretty good pile of the sand (poop form ) behind him. He well stay in one place for quite a while. Ive had him for about mmmm 8 months now. And he grew but not all that fast. When he streches out he is about 5 in" long i'm guessing the length When I got him he was about ohhhhh about 3".

Hay I bought a tiger tail cuke and have not seen it in a long time, thought it was dead. But for about a week now have noticed little piles of sand building up. I guess thats where he is buried in the sand, pooping it out. Pretty cool. I bought it from FFExpress.

When I say he stays in one place I mean for like a day or two. But when he is ready to move he can go pretty fast. I'm looking at him rite now he has been out most of today but then i wont see him for several days. I added some sand to my tank and forgot about him and buried him! But after I dug him back up he had no ill effects and didnt hurt anything in the tank poor lil slithor (his name hehe)

Cukes
Hello,
We have two. One is the black type, we call the pickle, because he used to be greener and look like a big sweet pickle He comes out and stays out most of the time. We have had him/her for over two years. Got him from Saltwaterfish.com. He did climb to the top of the LR last spring, got a spout out of the top of his head and spewed milky stuff into the water column for about 15 minutes and went back to the sand bed.
The second one is a Tiger Tail. He is very sensitve to light and mainly comes out at night and retreats to the LR when the lights come on. He stretches out to almost 14'' long at times. They never bother anything, except if the knock over a frag or small clam when they clean around and under them if they can get there
THey are pretty cool and do a great job! Have fun with yours!
Chris
