zoanthid trouble

I traded some shrooms for a colony of zoos thursday. They were not looking very good in the store. Only about 10 polyps were open out of about 200 or so. They are on a piece of tonga branch rock. In the middle of the rock they look like they are rotting. I shook them lightly in a bucket of tank water. They are now in the bottom of the tank in a high flow area. There are about 20 open now above the bad area and only a couple below. I am wondering if I should frag the good ones or give them more time.

First thing I would do is give them an Iodine dip, after a week or 2 I would decide on the fragging issue, they are often grumpy after moving , but the fact they dint look hot before you got them shoulda set off alarm bells. I have done rescues but they were at little or no cost

Thanks Doug. I'll have to read up on iodine dip. Have never done one before. The shrooms were a frag. Didn't cost me a dime.

all else fails use Kents Iodine or one of the hobby versions at 2-3 times recommended dose in a container of salt water and soak for a min, then return coral to the tank and toss the water

I had this dilemma today regarding iodine dip. I couldn't figure out what 2 - 3 times the normal dose would be. The bottle said something like 1 capful for every 50 gallons... to I just put maybe 5 - 6 drops in my little quart of SW to make the dip. Is that enough to be effective?

I would add just enough iodine to give the slightest hint of color to the water. Once you see the water start to change color...STOP!!!!

My Iodine additive is clear... or at least it looks that way when I pour it into the cap. Maybe I'm using the wrong thing!

Found this at dynamicecomorphology and have read similar at other places. The dip procedure to kill surface disease is 20 minutes in 1 liter of 100 % captive reef water that has 10 drops of 5 % lugols solution (or 20 drops of the tincture of iodine found at local drug stores which is typically a 2.2 % solution). I tried the tincture but only left in for about 5 min. I have put it back in the current. After 24hours it still looks the same as before the dip.
